Faith is active
‘By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.’ (Hebrews 11:8)
In the last post we saw how faith starts by hearing the voice of God. Here in this verse we also see another key ingredient of authentic faith — it acts!Abraham believed the promise of God and so took action. He gathered his family and possessions and left what was comfortable, secure, safe and familiar. He left.He actually got up, bought or made himself a tent and left. And all of this before he had ever physically laid eyes on the promised land.
For me, this is such a helpful picture of faith because we at Life Church have been called to live as a community of faith. Like Abraham, so often all we will have is a promise from God. That’s it! Yet are we going to live as a community that, because God has spoken, acts? Are we going to be a community that, because we have a promise from heaven, we’re willing to move venue, employ more staff, expand our social action work, work in partnership with agencies and organisations that are unfamiliar to us and reshape how we look to facilitate small group discipleship communities?Faith acts because we have promises from heaven.
So, this week, what steps of faith do you need to take? Write them down. Pray about them and then, like Abraham, do it!
